It's Gonna be a Hectic Week

First lets cover a few things from the past week.

I did some grilling on the weekend of the 10th. Needed to do a Turkey for the in-laws, so while smoking the turkey I tossed on some corned beef, and some chicken for our dinner.

The turkey turned out fantastic. Since it was poultry the cats gave it a thumbs up.

A few weeks ago I was mowing the lawn and the mower blew up. I mean it literally blew up.. I heard a bang and looked down. The piston rod was laying on the deck of the mower and the block had a big hole in it. Luckily its now high summer and the lawn is not growing very fast. The clan has a mower so we've been paying them to come over and mow. As a side benefit that means we get to see Baby Bird more often. Last weekend was a mowing weekend so guess who was here. I managed to her to stand still for a bit.

And one of her in action.

Now why is this week hectic? Well this weekend is Swine Stewards first competition of the year (well actually my partner snuck off and did one last weekend). It is going to be at The Boise Music Festival. We are willing to have guests come down and there may be a bonus if you do.

Here is the schedule

FRIDAY JULY 23RD.

8:00AM- VENUE OPENS FOR LOAD-IN. TEAM PACKETS DISTRIBUTED AT LOAD-IN
10:00AM- MEAT INSPECTIONS (INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSPECTION PROCESS IN YOUR PACKETS)
6:00 PM- COOKS MEETING
11:00PM-7:00 AM QUIET TIME ENFORCED

SATURDAY JULY 24TH.

11:00 AM- JUDGES MEETING
12:00 PM- CHICKEN TURN-IN
12:30 PM- RIBS TURN-IN
1:00 PM- PORK TURN-IN
1:30 PM- BRISKET TURN-IN
4:00PM- AWARDS

Friday will be pretty boring as its just setup and getting the cooking going. However, most of the teams will be in a more "chatty" mood. I know that I'll be putting my brisket on to cook about 4pm. I will be away from the event from 5pm - 11pm since I have to go teach that night. The next day is when it gets a bit more exciting. If you do come down be warned that from 11AM - to 1:30PM the teams will be prepping their turn ins and under a lot of stress. Really not a great time to be around us as we're a bit on the cranky side and not very friendly. After the last turn in at 1:30 there is a collective sigh of relaxation amongst the competitors as the race is finally over. This is the best time to see if "samples" will be given away. Most competitors cook up way more meat then they need to turn in and want to get rid of the extras. This is not mandatory and not a promise that it will happen. If you are polite it greatly enhances your chances of getting samples. I'd be willing to give some brisket to people I know, but will not be giving out to the general public. I'm not sure about whether or not my partner will be giving out samples. He generally sells his leftover pork butts to co-workers.

We would appreciate having as many friends as possible at the awards ceremony. The music festival will go on all day on Saturday according to the email I received "The venue will be closed to all vehicular traffic from 10:00AM Saturday until 12:00PM Saturday night." and "The only access to the venue on Saturday will be by “shuttle”. If you have friends coming to visit, refer them to the website Boise Music Festival for shuttle “pick-up” points." The good news is that our teams entry fee covers the entry fees for friends and family members. So if you come down either to see us or want to check out the music fest just make sure to say that you are with Team Swine Stewards and you should be able to get in for free.
